Welcome to the The Thought That Counts Podcast based upon my contributions to my local radio station's, "The Thought That Counts" slot. This is broadcast on The Breakfast Show and The Lunchtime Show over the period of a week. Each broadcast lasts about 90 seconds. My contributions are all based around some aspect of emotional intelligence and resilience. These contributions have been put together as hints and tips in this podcast. On this occasion, my reflections explore

artificial intelligence, covering:

Insights into Artificial Intelligence, the limitations of Artificial Tntelligence, the dangers of Artificial Intelligence, Artificial Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence, and why Artificial Intelligence will never have Emotional Intelligence. I hope you enjoyed the podcast, and these, The Thought That Counts. The Thought That Counts. In today's rapidly evolving technological landscape, artificial intelligence, AI, has emerged as a powerful force that is reshaping industries, enhancing productivity, and revolutionising the way we interact with machines. AI has the remarkable ability to analyse vast amounts of data, identify patterns, and make informed decisions with remarkable accuracy. This capacity empowers AI systems, like ChatGPT, to understand and respond to natural human language processing and to enable seamless and intuitive communication between humans and machines. With machine learning algorithms at its core, ChatGPT can comprehend complex queries, provide relevant information, and engage in dynamic conversations. As we continue to explore and refine these technologies, responsible development and ethical considerations will be essential to their full potential for the betterment of society. We need the ability not only to have high-performance systems, but also to understand when we can not trust those systems. As more and more artificial intelligence enters the world, more and more emotional intelligence must enter into guidance, control, and governance. One machine can do the work of 50 ordinary people, no machine can do the work of one extraordinary person. The Thought That Counts. Have you noticed how the media have been getting into a bit of a panic around artificial intelligence? From quotes from key business leaders through to politicians predicting the end of the world and calling for ways to restrict its advance. Whilst AI and GPT have revolutionised various aspects of our lives, it's crucial to acknowledge their limitations. AI often lacks the common sense reasoning abilities which we as human beings naturally possess. This can lead AI systems to generate outputs that seem plausible but are fundamentally incorrect. AI systems are susceptible to biases present in the data that they're trained on, which can result in biased or prejudiced outputs. They also struggle to grasp the contextual nuances of human language, so that ambiguous queries can be misinterpreted and provide inaccurate, unintended, or undesirable outcomes, especially in complex scenarios that require human supervision to align with their intended purpose. We need to ensure human judgment and accountability remain paramount. I asked ChatGPT to write something for the Thought That Counts. No matter how I phrase the question or how many times I tried, it couldn't do it. If AI isn't capable of producing a thought-provoking 60-second sound bite, I think we're a long way from the destruction of the human race. The Thought That Counts. As we embrace the advancements in AI and ChatGPT, it's important to recognise and address their potential dangers. AI powered systems can be used to spread misinformation or manipulate public opinion at an unprecedented scale. They can also create convincing impersonations and deep fakes. We need to ensure that safeguards are put in place to detect and counteract any malicious activity to mitigate these risks, to ensure the integrity of information and to maintain trust. The extensive data processing capabilities of AI systems raise concerns about privacy and surveillance, so it will be necessary to protect individuals' privacy rights around data collection, storage, and usage. AI technologies can be vulnerable to security threats, including adversarial attacks that aim to deceive or manipulate AI models. Clear guidelines, robust security measures, continual monitoring, and ethical frameworks are necessary to ensure decisions made by AI systems align with the values of our society. The automation potential of AI increases the concerns about job displacement across various industries and, as AI systems become more autonomous, issues around accountability and responsibility arise. Will robots inherit the Earth? Yes, but they will be our children. The Thought That Counts. Emotional intelligence plays a vital role in human interactions, and integrating it as far as possible into artificial intelligence and ChatGPT brings new possibilities. AI's ability to process vast amounts of data can offer valuable insights into emotional trends and patterns. This information can be used to identify societal emotional wellbeing, assess mental health trends, and help with targeted interventions. AI-powered systems can act as virtual companions, providing emotional support and a listening ear. They can offer encouragement, validation, and suggest coping mechanisms, promoting emotional wellbeing, and reducing feelings of loneliness. AI can be designed to understand users' emotions and respond accordingly by analysing tone, context, and sentiment. AI can provide objective and constructive personalised feedback on emotional expression and communication, and can provide empathetic and supportive responses, fostering a sense of connection. AI technologies can assist in teaching emotional intelligence skills by providing interactive lessons, scenarios, and role-playing exercises. By analysing conversations, people can be helped to navigate social interactions more effectively. The future is exciting as we work to foster meaningful connections between humans and machines. The Thought That Counts. Emotions underpin communication and are a necessary part of human interactions. Emotional intelligence enables us as humans to perceive, understand, and respond to emotions effectively, to discern subtle cues, and then determine the appropriate emotional responses. From this, we can adjust our behaviour based upon the context of situations. Emotional intelligence facilitates empathy, enabling humans to establish meaningful connections to provide authentic support, understanding, and companionship. Empathy builds trust by aligning responses with our emotional needs. Without emotional intelligence, AI and ChatGPT struggle to accurately interpret and address the emotional nuances of human communication, leading to limited comprehension and misinterpretation, and so potentially leading to inappropriate responses or insensitive outputs. AI and ChatGPT are unable to effectively mediate conflict, offer appropriate resolutions, or provide emotional guidance, and lack the capacity to consider the emotional impact of their decisions. Researchers are exploring ways to incorporate affective computing, which involves recognising and responding to human emotions. But this will always be limited because machines do not possess the tool responsible for emotional intelligence, a human brain.
